Firefox3

How my Portable Firefox has grown. I was horrified when I noticed how my portable of Firefox has grown from its original 26MB to a whopping 156MB. That is quite an increase in size. I have added a few add-ons, but I fail to believe the increase is because of these add-ons.

I have failed to find any posts of others having Firefox bloat. Perhaps it is because I updated Firefox 2 to Firefox 3? I have decided to rebuild Firefox from scratch.

I download a fresh copy of portable Firefox 3 to my desktop. Making sure that the unpacked paf file would unpack to my desktop I unpacked Firefox. Opening the old copy of Firefox from my portable device I clicked on Tools and Add-ons. I then made decisions as to the add-ons I wanted to keep and what add-ons I no longer wanted.

Add-on’s add functionality to Firefox and help me to be more productive while I surf the web. I decided on the following:

  • VideoDownloadHelper allows you t download any videos on the page
  • Firefox Showcase show cases the latest Firefox add-ons
  • FoxyProxy adds proxy server to Firefox and allows you to surf in anonymously.
Foxmarks Book Synchronizer is a great add-on that keeps your bookmarks synced on whatever computer you are on.
  • Gmail Notifier. Like the name implies notifies you when you receive email to your Gmail account and allow you to sign-in to your Email account right from Firefox.
  • Taboo takes a snap shot of each page, keeps track of your bookmarks, and where you were your scrolled to on the page. Something new to try.
  • Web Developer puts a whole a toolbars worth development tools at your fingertips.
  • WOT keeps you away from suspicious sites and scams.

I deleted the old copy of Firefox from the portable applications folder and moved the fresh copy of Firefox from my desktop to the portable applications folder. After adding the add-on’s and syncing my bookmarks my portable Firefox folder size is approximately 43MB. 43MB is considerably less than the original 156MB copy. I will keep a closer eye on that folder and we will see how things go.
