Windows includes several utilities that will help you find out about your systems configuration, disk usage, and help you diagnose problems with failed devices.

Disk Properties

Disk Properties

In Windows Explorer or My Computer right click on a drive and choose Properties. Disk Properties allows you to view the total, used, and unused disk space on a drive. You will also notice the file system used for the drive and are able to rename the drive to something more appropriate.

System Properties

System Properties

Click on Start, Control Panel, and Performance and Maintenance; double click on System. On the General tab you will find the version of Windows you are running, any service packs you have installed, the CPU type & speed and the amount of RAM that is installed on your computer. To access System Properties using a shortcut press the Windows logo and Break keys combination.

By clicking on the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager Button you can find out about the devices that are installed on your system. Click on the plus sign to expand each device. If a device is not functioning properly the device will have a red exclamation point next to the device.

The System Information dialog box will allow you to view your current system configuration from hardware resources to the application software that you have installed.

Click on Start and Run; type in msinfo32 in the Run’s dialog open text field. System Information displays all types of information about your system including a summary of your systems settings and paths, hardware resources, components, software environment, and Internet settings.
