DATE: 19-June-2008 Oldest' Computer Music UnveiledBack in the day my dream was to purchase a Commodore 128. The Commodore was reported to have better capabilities then other computer at the time including better graphics and the ability to play music. Although I never did get to make that purchase, its price tag of around $500 was a lot back then, I have never lost my fascination with computer generated sound. I have experimented with Wav editors, have added effects to my own recordings of my surroundings and have created my own computer generated music compilations. The BBC recently posted an article on the discovery of the oldest computer generated music. The music was created on a Ferranti Mark 1 at the University of Manchester back in 1951. The page features a sound Byte of “In the Mood” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep” compilation. There is also a short video clip recorded back in 1948 about the birth of Baby, the forerunner of modern computers. Additional Resources Wikipedia Article on the Commodore 128 |
