Microsoft’s Windows assigns specific commands for each function keys; however, each computer manufacture assigns different commands to the function keys.

Windows assigns the following commands to these function keys for boot operations:

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed, the following function keys can be used:

F2 - To automatically start the Automated System Recovery (ASR) process.
F10 - To bypass the menu screens and to load the Recovery Console

During graphical user interface (GUI)-Mode Setup, the following function keys can be used:

SHIFT+F10 - To enable access to a command prompt during GUI-Mode Setup
SHIFT+F11 - To display "old-style" wizards that give more detail

Dell Computers make use of the following keys for booting options and to access the Set-up Menu:

F12- Boot Device Menu
F2 - Set-up Menu

My Compaq computer uses the following function keys for these boot options:

Esc - Boot Menu
F10 - Boot Device Menu
F1 - System Restore
