Tiny and Portable Calculator

This mini calculator is a tiny file and won’t take-up a lot of room on your desktop. Mini Calculator provides simple mathematical functions like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. In addition, the strip, think of it like a tape, will allow you to double check the entered values.

ToDoList

ToDoList

ToDoList offers a simple and uncomplicated way to keep track of your To Do Lists. Weighing in at a mere 157KB ToDoList qualifies as a Tiny Application and is a great addition to my portable application collection.

ToDoList Alert

ToDoList has many neat features including an Alert that reminds you of your To Do tasks and the ability of setting-up categorized lists of tasks. It features a small interface that won't take-up a lot of room on your desktop and adds a icon in your tray allowing you quick access to your tasks lists.

Clip Clear

Although it probably isn't’t the best practice sometimes when I am signing-up for a new account that requires you to reenter a password I copy the first entry into the reenter field. If I am at home I don’t worry about doing this, but if I am using a shared computer having sensitive data falling into the wrong hands could be disastrous.

Clip Clear is a portable clipboard utility that allows you to clear the Windows clipboard. When Clip Clear is activated an icon will appear in your tray. If there is anything on the clipboard the Clip Clear icon will appear with an X through it. To avoid sensitive data from being viewed and to clear the clipboard click on the X. Right clicking on the Clip Clear icon will allow you to view the clipboard viewer.

A Tiny Directory of Tiny Applications Sites

Tiny applications, in my mind, are applications that are 1MB in size or less. The first four sites specialize in tiny applications. Tiny typically means that they are also portable.

All software listed on these sites is free. Some of the sites solicit donations. Donate when and what you can. Every bit helps keeps the wheels turning.

TinyApps
TinyApps is the granddaddy of tiny application sites and has the most extensive list of tiny applications. The site offers a well organized categorized list of tiny applications, offers tiny applications for MAC, and features a Blog that features many new tiny applications.

Lucersoft
Lucersoft offers a small collection of tiny applications that are mostly written in C, C++ and assembler language. Some very useful applications like the ISO Creator and Playlist initially caught my eye. All of the applications are under 25 KB.

Webxpace
Ever since my PDA stopped working I have been looking for a good To Do List application that offered a check when completed option. Webxpace presents a small collection of fourteen tiny applications. The To Do List offers an easy to use interface and a reminder feature; neat program. To Do List makes a great addition to my portable applications collection.

Tiny Editors
Tiny Editors specializes strictly in tiny text editors; you will not find any other type of application here. Tiny Editors features editors for multiple platforms and offers many tiny editors. Try 5KB for size. Nice eccentric collection of editors, seriously!

XTort
Xtort is one of my favorite application sites. The link will take you to the Floppy office download page. Floppy Office is a suite consisting of 16 applications that range from tiny to small file sizes. The unzipped package takes-up about 2MB of storage. Xtort also offers many tiny, small, and portable applications.

Shell Extension City
Another one of my favorites, Shell Extension City’s specialty is Windows shell scripts and shell replacements. Shell Extension City also offers many tiny and portable applications. There are twenty eight pages of software that are listed alphabetically. Some pages offer some pretty extensive lists of applications.

Create Animations on the Go

Unfreeze

Unfreeze is a tiny program, 27KB that is used to create frame by frame GIF animations. Unfreezes simple interface will make it easy to create own animations. All there is to do is, create a series of images, load them into Unfreeze, click the loop animation option, if you want your animation to loop continuously, and click the Make Animation GIF button. Simple! You may have to experiment with the frame delay to get the desired effect you want.

Tiny Applications

With CPU speeds in the gigahertz GHz and storage capabilities in the terabytes many of us have lost sight of the lowly kilobyte. Although operating systems and applications have grown in size so that they can span multiple CD or DVD’s when DOS was in its heyday programs fit on a single floppy disk.

There is something about small and portable applications that has captures our imagination. It is cool and convenient to be able to take your data and the tools used to create the data along with you wherever you go.

Portable doesn't’t necessarily mean small. Many portable applications have caught the program bloat bug. They are self contained and portable, but still take up a considerable amount of space on your USB device.

How about programs that are less than a megabyte? How about a whole suite of programs that can easily fit on a 16MB SD card and leave room to spare? How about programs that are less than 100K? Impossible? Okay, maybe it is possible, but the programs won’t be all that much use. Think again.

There are two sites in particular that specialize in tiny applications. One such site, TinyApps, offers many programs under 100K. The programs usually perform one function, are self-contained and portable.

Another site that offers many tiny and portable programs is the Interesting DOS Programs site. DOS programs have inheritably small foot prints. There are diagnostic utilities, programming tools and applications listed on the site. Many could be run from your portable device.
